Sylvia Jean Patterson Memorial Scholarship
Sylvia Jean Patterson was a college roommate of The 516 Foundation Founder, Dr. Christina Rosenthal. After high school, Sylvia and Dr. Rosenthal both attended the University of Memphis. What began as a random assignment during sophomore year became a lifelong friendship. The memories are plentiful, and Sylvia supported Dr. Rosenthal in every single way, even being a bridesmaid in her wedding! She was a true friend, not only to Dr. Rosenthal but to others on The 516 board, members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the University of Memphis community, and to many she met near and far.
In an effort to honor her, The 516 Foundation is giving away a one-time, $1,000 room and board scholarship to a student who attends the University of Memphis. In addition to the scholarship, the winner will also be treated to a mentorship dinner with Dr. Rosenthal on Sunday, August 26, which would have been Sylvia’s 40th birthday. The application process is simple. Complete the one-page application, and a write a 150 words or less essay describing your ideal roommate.
