Even at the pre-school level, we understand the benefit that exposure has on long-term achievement.
In a consensus statement from the Pre-Kindergarten Task Force at Duke University, the following conclusion was drawn:
“Children’s early learning trajectories depend on the quality of their learning experiences not only before and during their pre-k year, but also following the pre-k year. Classroom experiences early in elementary school can serve as charging stations for sustaining and amplifying pre-k learning gains. One good bet for powering up later learning is elementary school classrooms that provide individualization and differentiation in instructional content and strategies.” (Lipsey, Dodge, Phillips, Haskins, Bassok, & Burchinal, 2017)
What does this mean? It simply means what we all know to be true. Positive learning experiences that children have before, during, and after kindergarten have a strong impact on academic achievement. It emphasizes the need to have instruction that is appropriate and diversified in presentation. Although STEAM-related curricula have become a focal point for every level of academia, it is rare to find programming embedded at the pre-school level, specifically with a healthcare professions focus. This deficiency creates the need for a pre-school initiative that could supplement core instruction.
Introduced in June of 2018, DDS Explorers is designed to be an interactive, fun, and engaging learning experience for toddlers who are two to six years old with a primary objective of exposing them to the various healthcare professions. All activities are STEAM-based, age-appropriate and created to tap into the individualized learning style of each participant. The Program is comprised of four to five sessions, with each having a different area of focus. After the last session, Explorers are celebrated with a special ceremony, which can be attended by family and friends.
Registration for the 2025 Toddler Explorers Program begins November 2024!
